Opening Reception—“Taste of Pittsburgh”

Join old friends…meet new colleagues!
Celebrate the kick-off of SSR’s 42nd Annual Meeting at the “Taste of Pittsburgh” Opening Reception, on the Exhibit Hall Concourse of the David L. Lawrence Convention Center overlooking the Allegheny River. The menu for the reception includes traditional “signature” Pittsburgh food:
- Pierogies from the Rocks, made locally (cheese- and potato-filled dumplings);
- Traditional Polish Sausage, served with sauerkraut;
- Sandwiches inspired by Pittsburgh’s “Strip District” (assorted deli meats or steak & cheese, fries, and coleslaw served on locally made bread);
- Klondike ice cream bars and Clark candy bars for dessert;
- Two drink tickets per meeting registrant, then a cash bar.
Trainee/Mentor Luncheon
Sunday 19 July, 11:30 am–1:00 pm ($15). Third Floor Meeting Room 319/320/321, DLLCC.
This event is for Trainee registrants only; just 175 seats will be available. The luncheon provides Trainee participants with the opportunity to talk to an SSR scientist about careers and science during a catered lunch. Senior/Emeritus Breakfast
Monday 20 July, 7:00–8:00 am ($30). Lawrence Welk Room, Omni William Penn Hotel.
At the Senior/Emeritus Breakfast, Barry Zirkin will share personal and professional memories of Larry Ewing (in whose memory the Larry Ewing Memorial Trainee Travel Fund was created). Minority Affairs Health Disparities Symposium & Lunch

All are invited to attend the Minority Affairs Health Disparities Symposium from 11:45 am–12:30 pm. Immediately following the Symposium, a buffet-style lunch will be served for Symposium attendees.
SSR Night at PNC Park
Monday 20 July, 7:00 pm ($25 per seat). PNC Park.
Attendees of the 42nd Annual Meeting are invited to an evening of baseball at PNC Park, where the Pittsburgh Pirates will battle the Milwaukee Brewers. A section of infield box seats has been reserved for SSR attendees at USD $25 per seat. One lucky SSR attendee will be chosen to change the base on the field during the game!

Barbecue, Dance & Riverboat Cruise on the Ohio
Tuesday 21 July, 6:30 pm–midnight ($45 Trainees, $70 all others)
6:30–8:30 pm: The traditional SSR Barbecue will take place this year on a Gateway Clipper Fleet Riverboat Cruise! The riverboat will dock at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center for boarding at 6:00 pm, and set sail for a 2-hour dinner cruise of the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio Rivers. The menu for the barbecue includes the following:
- Beef brisket with buns;
- Barbecue chicken breast;
- Black bean, sweet corn, and vine ripened tomato salad;
- Spinach salad with cranberries, almonds, and pomegranate vinaigrette dressing;
- Lemon rice pilaf;
- Roasted garlic potatoes;
- Apple cobbler;
- Iced tea, coffees, and hot tea;
- Two drink tickets per person for wine, beer, or soda, then a cash bar.
8:30 pm–midnight: The riverboat will return to the convention center by 8:30 pm, where attendees will disembark for an exciting evening of dancing inside the Convention Center.
Food Service
An SSR 2009 Annual Meeting badge is required for access at all supported food functions. Continental breakfasts, lunch kiosks, and morning and afternoon breaks will be set up on the second floor of the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, near Exhibit Hall C. Please refer to your Schedule of Events for dates and times.
