If you already have Reader on your computer, you do not need to download it again. If you print them out from the Adobe Reader on A4 paper, you will need to select the “shrink-to-fit” option. You may also have to use this option if you print on paper that is either narrower or shorter than the original size (mostly 8-1/2"x11").

Trainee/Mentor Luncheon

The Trainee-Mentor Luncheon provides Trainee participants with the opportunity to talk with an SSR scientist about careers and science during a catered lunch (Sunday, 19 July, Meeting Room 319/320/321, Third Floor, DLLC). More information can be found on the Trainee/Mentor Luncheon page.

Trainee Mentoring Award and Trainee Forum

The Trainee Mentoring Award is presented each year at the SSR Annual meeting to an SSR member who has consistently demonstrated a measure of support and guidance to Trainees that far exceeds the basic responsibilities required of an academic advisor. This year, the Society honors Fuller W. Bazer, Ph.D. (Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas). The presentation will be Tuesday, 21 July at 4:00 pm in the Spirit of Pittsburgh Ballroom B, Third Floor, DLLCC.

The Trainee Forum, Beyond the Bench: Exploring Career Opportunities and Striving for Success, will immediately follow the presentation of the Trainee Mentoring Award.

FASEB MARC Travel Awards to SSR 2009

The FASEB MARC program (http://marc.faseb.org/) offers opportunities for travel awards to the SSR annual meeting for underrepresented trainees. Trainees must be presenting a poster or making an oral presentation. Because SSR is a member of FASEB, interested and eligible individuals may apply for funding to support travel to this year's SSR meeting. Note that the application is restricted to underrepresented trainees who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the U.S.A. More information is available at:

Placement Service

The SSR Placement Service provides a vehicle for introducing potential candidates to potential employers seeking to fill predoctoral, postdoctoral, industrial, technical, and faculty positions. We do not attempt to match candidates with positions, nor do we arrange interviews. We do not maintain a file of CVs or formal job announcements. However, we are able to transfer position announcements posted at the Annual Meeting to the FASEB Career Resources online listing if requested. This service is free of charge. In addition, a message board is available at the SSR Annual Meeting for the exchange of information among users of the Placement Service. The Placement Service Form will be made available at a later date.

Roommate Referral Service

The SSR’s Roommate Referral service is being coordinated by the Trainee Affairs Committee. This service connects trainees (and others) with persons seeking roommates for the meeting. More information is available on the Roommate Referral Form.

This year, the Trainee Volunteers are being organized by Dan Poole & Brandon Lingenfelter, who write:

The 2008 annual SSR meeting in Hawaii saw a lot of firsts for the society, including unprecedented participation by trainee members. It was the first year trainees were charged with supporting the annual meeting, via the Trainee Volunteer Subcommittee (TVS). In total, 81 trainees served in various capacities working an estimated 340 hours! We had trainees from Europe, Asia, South America, Australia, New Zealand, and North America volunteer to serve, reflecting the diversity of SSR. The volunteers assisted in:

We thank those who volunteered at the 41st SSR meeting, helping to make it a memorable event. This year, the 42nd SSR meeting is in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The TVS committee, chaired by Dan Poole (dhp10@psu.edu) and Brandon Lingenfelter (blingenfelter@wvsom.edu), is looking for more excited trainees who want to come out, volunteer, meet exciting new people and help make this year’s meeting a huge success.
