SSR 2014 - Special Events and Optional Items

In addition to the scientific program, a variety of educational and social events will be available to Meeting participants.

Opening Reception

Saturday, 19 July, 7:00–8:30 p.m. (Free to registrants; $15 for each guest).
Location to be announced.

Celebrate the kick-off of the SSR's 47th Annual Meeting by attending the Opening Reception on the Grand Valley State University Campus, just across the river from the meeting site. The shuttle to the Opening Reception will depart from the Amway Grand Plaza Lyon Street side entrance, between the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel and DeVos Place Convention Center. Admission is included in the registration fee; tickets for guests are $15.

Fun Run 2014 (proceeds benefit the LEMTTF)

Sunday, 20 July, 5:30–7:00 a.m. (pre-registrants: $30 [includes T-shirt]; on-site registrants: $15 [no T-shirt]).

From 5:30–6:00 a.m., runners and walkers will meet (and late-comers can register) at DeVos Place Convention Center (near the Gillette Pedestrian Bridge). At 6:15 a.m., participants will begin the 5-km circuit that runs along both sides of the Grand River, beginning and ending at DeVos Place.

Diversity Committee Lunch Symposium

Sunday, 20 July, 12:15–1:45 p.m. (Symposium: Free to registrants; Lunch: $10—pre-registrants only).

This year's symposium will feature Dr. José Cordero, pediatrician, epidemiologist, teratologist, and Dean of the Graduate School of Public Health at the University of Puerto Rico. Dr. Cordero was Assistant Surgeon General of the United States Public Health Service and Founding Director of the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. The symposium will be linked with the luncheon to encourage interaction and discussion between Dr. Cordero and those attending.

The symposium is open to all registrants; however, lunch will be provided only for those who ordered and paid during pre-registration, before the start of the meeting.

Trainee–Mentor Luncheon

Monday, 21 July, 12:15–1:45 p.m. ($15, for trainees only).
Location to be announced.

The Trainee–Mentor Luncheon is for trainee registrants only; participation is limited to 175 trainees. The luncheon provides trainee participants with the opportunity to talk to an SSR scientist about careers and science during a catered lunch.

Heritage Luncheon

Tuesday, 22 July, 12:15–1:45 p.m. ($25 for non-trainees; $10 for trainee registrants).

The SSR Heritage Committee is hosting a luncheon and talk honoring Dr. Chris Polge, whose research in preserving the function of living cells at cryogenic temperatures prepared the foundation for the field of cryobiology. The presentation will be delivered by Sir Ian Wilmut (University of Edinburgh, Scottish Centre for Regenerative Medicine, Edinburgh, Scotland), who is best known as the leader of the research group that first cloned a mammal from an adult somatic cell: a Finnish Dorset lamb named Dolly. Dr. Wilmut received his Ph.D. in Dr. Polge's laboratory. A special invitation is extended to Trainees to attend this luncheon at a discounted rate of $10.00.

Barbecue & Dance

Tuesday, 22 July, 7:00 p.m.–12:30 a.m. (Barbecue: 7:00–8:30 p.m., $20 for trainee registrants, $35 for all others; Dance: 8:45 p.m.–12:30 a.m., open to all).

The menu for the barbecue will include traditional Midwestern picnic fare: chicken, barbecued beef, salad, corn-on-the-cob, breads, dessert, and a vegetarian entrée. Each person will receive two drink tickets for wine, beer, or soda; a cash bar will be available for additional/other drink purchases.

The Sun Messengers will take the stage at 8:45 p.m. The dance portion of the evening is open to all registrants and paid barbecue guests.

T-Shirt Sale

SSR 2014 T-Shirt (Back) SSR 2014 T-Shirt (Front) T-shirts with the SSR 2014 logo will be available for $15 each in both female and unisex adult styles (small to XXL). Proceeds of T-shirt sales support the Larry Ewing Memorial Trainee Travel Fund (LEMTTF). T-shirts should be purchased during pre-registration; a limited supply will be available for purchase at the Meeting.

Microbrewery Tour (Independently Operated Event) CANCELLED

Monday, 21 July, 7:00–11:00 p.m. (standard ticket: $39; premium ticket: $69).

Participants will first tour Perrin Brewing Company, a production-scale brewery that opened in September 2012 and quickly made a name for itself. Premium-ticket holders will partake in a meal and custom flight. The second stop is The Mitten Brewing Company, a vintage baseball-themed microbrewery in a historic building that once was an engine house. Premium-ticket holders will again receive a custom flight. The third stop is Founder's Brewing Company, Grand Rapids' granddaddy of craft beer, which is routinely among the top-rated breweries in the world. Premium-ticket holders will enjoy a pint before returning to the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel.
