SSR 2015 Travel Grants and Fellowships

These grants and fellowships are intended to defray the travel costs associated with attending and presenting at the SSR Annual Meeting.

Larry Ewing Memorial Trainee Travel Fund (LEMTTF)

The Larry Ewing Memorial Trainee Travel Fund was established by SSR in honor of the late Dr. Larry Ewing, who was an ardent supporter of SSR's commitment to Trainees. The Fund is supported by donations, grant monies from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver NICHD/NIH, and the sale of commemorative t-shirts at each meeting. The SSR Trainee Affairs Committee evaluates applications and determines allocation of funds in consultation with the Trainee Advisors.

Trainee Members of the Society who have limited funds may request travel assistance from the LEMTTF. Grants made through the LEMTTF are considered reimbursements and are intended to offset the cost of attending the Annual Meeting.

To be a qualified applicant, you must be:

  1. an SSR Trainee Member whose membership dues are paid and mentor's signature is on file in the SSR Business Office by the deadline for submission of abstracts (30 January 2015), and
  2. the first author of an accepted abstract who attends and presents (poster or oral presentation) at the 2015 SSR Annual Meeting.

LEMTTF for 2015

The individual grant amounts distributed in 2015 will be greater, particularly for international trainees, than in previous years, which will help offset the costs for trainees to attend the meeting!

Please read this document for additional information on the travel grants as well as compelling reasons why you as a Trainee should attend SSR 2015.

Trainee Members who submit an abstract for the Annual Meeting and wish to be considerated for an LEMTTF grant must complete the online application form prior to the abstract submission deadline as well as be or become a current Trainee Member of SSR. Upon receipt of the completed application, the Trainee Affairs Committee will send confirmation of receipt to all applicants. Please see the application form for additional information.

Burroughs Wellcome Travel Fellowships for Underrepresented Minority Trainees and Junior Faculty

A grant from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund provides travel fellowships for underrepresented minority trainees and junior faculty from the U.S. and Canada to enable their participation in the SSR Annual Meeting. The fellowship includes reimbursement of meeting registration; up to USD $1,200 for housing, food, and travel expenses; and complimentary SSR Membership through the next calendar year. Recipients also receive a meeting T-shirt and a ticket to a social function.

Fellowships are awarded competitively on the basis of applications submitted to and evaluated by the SSR Diversity Committee. Approximately six trainees and three junior (non-tenured) faculty with a background in reproductive biology receive fellowships each year.

Membership in the Society is not a requirement, nor is submission of an abstract for presentation. To be a qualified applicant, you must be:

  1. a member of an underrepresented minority,
  2. a resident of the U.S. or Canada, and
  3. enrolled as a student in or teaching at an accredited, degree-granting institution in the U.S. or Canada.

This award provides full support to attend the Meeting; therefore, recipients may not accept additional travel awards (i.e., LEMTTF, FASEB MARC, USDA–NIFA–AFRI, or Lalor Awards).

Please download the 2015 Burroughs Wellcome Fellowship Application. The deadline for applications is 20 April 2015.

    FASEB MARC Travel Awards

The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB), through its Maximizing Access to Research Careers (MARC) program, provides funding for travel awards to encourage and support the participation of underrepresented students and postdoctoral fellows at scientific meetings. Because SSR is a member of FASEB, interested and eligible individuals may apply to FASEB MARC for funding to support travel to SSR's Annual Meeting.

    2015 Awardees

The 2015 Travel Awardees and Peer Mentor/Mentees have been announced by FASEB MARC.

Two types of awards are available for the 2015 Annual Meeting:

    • The Poster/Platform (Oral) Presenter Travel Award is restricted to underrepresented trainees who are U.S. citizens or are permanent residents of the U.S.A. and who reside within the U.S.A. or its territories.
    • Local presenters may apply for Meeting Registration-Only Awards, available for Poster/Platform (Oral) Presenters who reside within a 50-mile radius of the meeting venue.

NOTE: Faculty/Student Travel Awards are not available for the SSR 2015 Annual Meeting.

Please visit FASEB MARC Travel Awards for Scientific Meetings for details about eligibility and the evaluation process. For the non-local Travel Award, use the non-meeting-specific form marked "2015 Poster/Platform (Oral) Application (MS Word) January-June 2015." For applicants within 50 miles of San Juan, use the "2015 Meeting Registration ONLY - Local Area Student/Postdoc Application (MS Word) January-June 2015."
