SSR 2016 Travel Grants and Fellowships

These grants and fellowships are intended to defray the travel costs associated with attending and presenting at the SSR Annual Meeting.

Larry Ewing Memorial Trainee Travel Fund (LEMTTF)

The Larry Ewing Memorial Trainee Travel Fund was established by SSR in honor of the late Dr. Larry Ewing, who was an ardent supporter of SSR's commitment to Trainees. The Fund has been supported by donations, grant monies from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver NICHD/NIH, fundraising efforts by the Trainee Affairs Committee, and the sale of commemorative t-shirts at each meeting. The SSR Trainee Affairs Committee evaluates applications and determines allocation of funds in consultation with the Trainee Advisors.

Trainee Members of the Society who have limited funds may request travel assistance from the LEMTTF. Grants made through the LEMTTF are considered reimbursements and are intended to offset the cost of attending the Annual Meeting. To be eligible for the LEMTTF (and all Trainee Awards), you must:

  1. be the first author of an accepted abstract who attends and presents (poster or oral presentation) at the 2016 SSR Annual Meeting, and
  2. be an SSR Trainee Member in good standing by the submission deadline, 15 February 2016.

New Trainee members should complete the membership form and follow the SSR Trainee membership procedures. A completed application, dues payment, and either a letter from the Trainee's mentor or a completed mentor signature form must be submitted by 15 February 2016. Current SSR Trainee members should renew their membership as soon as possible—certainly before 15 February 2016, and submit a signed mentor signature form. Trainee memberships will not be activated nor renewed until this mentor signature form is on file.

The SSR Business Office receives many Trainee applications at this time of year. The Business Office strongly encourages you to complete your Trainee application or renewal as early as you can, and if you are unable to do so in advance of the deadline, we will appreciate your patience while these applications and renewals are processed.

Trainee Members who submit an abstract for the Annual Meeting and wish to be considered for an LEMTTF grant should complete the LEMTTF section when the abstract is submitted. You will need to provide estimates of both your total cost to attend the annual meeting and the funding amount available to you from your institution. Your abstract submission confirmation is your confirmation of receipt. After the submission site closes, the Trainee Affairs Committee will send an application confirmation to all applicants.

Burroughs Wellcome Travel Fellowships for Underrepresented Minority Trainees and Junior Faculty

For more than 20 years, grants from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund have provided travel fellowships for underrepresented minority trainees and junior faculty from the U.S. and Canada to enable their participation in the SSR Annual Meetings. The fellowships include reimbursement of meeting registration, up to USD $1,200 for housing, food, and travel expenses; and complimentary SSR Membership through the next calendar year. Recipients traditionally also receive a meeting T-shirt and a ticket to a social function.

Fellowships are awarded competitively on the basis of applications submitted to and evaluated by the SSR Diversity Committee. Between six and nine fellowships for individuals with a background in reproductive biology are anticipated this year (up to six trainees and up to three junior, non-tenured, faculty).

Membership in the Society is not a requirement, nor is submission of an abstract for presentation. To be a qualified applicant, you must be:

  1. a member of an underrepresented minority,
  2. a resident of the U.S. or Canada, and
  3. enrolled as a student in or teaching at an accredited, degree-granting institution in the U.S. or Canada.

This award provides full support to attend the Meeting; therefore, recipients may not accept additional travel awards (i.e., LEMTTF, FASEB MARC, USDA–NIFA–AFRI, or Lalor Awards).
