From the 2016 Local Arrangements Committee

Welcome to San Diego!

Greetings from the Local Arrangements Committee (LAC) members for SSR '16!

We are excited and delighted that San Diego is the venue for the upcoming Annual Meeting of SSR, and we are looking forward to making this convention the best ever!

As members of the LAC, we will help organize some of the social activities, help with fundraising, develop an outreach activity for high school students, and organize a 5K Fun Run/Walk.

The conference will take place near the San Diego International Airport, which, unlike most airports, is in a beautiful part of town, with the seaport directly adjacent. The conference will also be in close proximity to myriad options for entertainment and sightseeing. While San Diego, the eighth largest city in the United States, is spread over a large swath of coastal land, there are plenty of unique neighborhoods and attractions well worth visiting. Balboa Park is the nation's largest urban cultural park and home to 15 major museums, renowned performing arts venues, beautiful gardens, and the San Diego Zoo. The incredibly scenic city of La Jolla is home to bio-engineering, medical practice, and scientific research; the University of California, San Diego (UCSD, is located in La Jolla, as are the Salk Institute, Scripps Institution of Oceanography (part of UCSD), and Scripps Research Institute (not to mention lots of sea lions).

If you love beaches, you're in for a treat; numerous sandy beaches, including Mission Beach and Coronado Beach, are easily accessible within the area's seventy miles of pristine coastline. History buffs will want to spend a few hours in Old Town San Diego, the site of the first Spanish settlement on the U.S. West Coast. Reserve time to explore 12 acres of Mexican lore and historical sites, colorful shops, early-California-style restaurants, and more. And in case you're worried that southern California will be sizzling hot in the summer, you may be surprised that the average July high in San Diego is a comfortable seventy-five degrees.

See you in July 2016!
