TVS Frequently Asked Questions
The Trainee Volunteer Subcommittee, or TVS, is a committee formed by the Society to provide structured opportunities for trainees to participate in the annual meeting.
1.What is the TVS?
The Trainee Volunteer Subcommittee exists to offer trainees structured opportunities to become more involved in the Society by volunteering at annual meetings.
2. Do I need any experience to be on the committee?
No experience is needed to participate on the TVS! In fact, if it’s your first meeting helping out with the TVS is a great way to see the meeting and meet new people. If it’s your 15th meeting the TVS is a great way to continue networking and reunite with old friends.
3. How much of a time commitment during the meeting is required?
The time commitment varies depending on the event you’d like to help with, so it is up to you. You can help as much or as little as you’d like, but every little bit helps.
4. I don’t know when my poster/talk will be so how do I volunteer without knowing when I’ll be available?
The TVS exists to support the meeting, so the meeting is the top priority. Be assured that any and all conflicts can be overcome. If you are interested in helping we will work with your schedule to make sure that your volunteer commitment enhances your meeting experience.
5. What type of events will the TVS help with?
The TVS will coordinate all of the trainee volunteers that facilitate the meeting. There are eight general areas, each of which has a variety of tasks associated with them.
- Pre-Registration Desk
- Slide Preview Room
- Signage
- Placement Service
- Posters
- Sessions and Symposia
- Social Events
- Trainee-Mentor Luncheon
6. I am uncomfortable speaking to large groups of people, is there anything that I can do to help that is more behind the scenes?
Trainees will be called upon for a number of different activities and we will strive to make sure that the TVS members are participating in an environment they are comfortable in. If you are a front and center person, then registration may be your niche. If you prefer behind the scenes work, then setting up signage and poster numbers may be your cup of tea. The TVS is about trying new things and working together for the improvement of the annual meeting. We will find something that works for you.
7. I don’t mind helping at the meeting, but I don’t want to be in charge of anything.
Not a problem at all, we need both volunteers and coordinators. All we ask is that you share your time and willingness to help.
8. How do I join the TVS?
Please contact Alison Ting at ting@ohsu.edu or Sadhat Walusimbi (ssw141@psu.edu).
