Grants and Merit Awards for Travel

These grants and awards support travel to attend and present at the Annual Meeting.

Travel Grants

Larry Ewing Memorial Trainee Travel Fund (LEMTTF)

The Larry Ewing Memorial Trainee Travel Fund was established by the Society for the Study of Reproduction in honor of the late Dr. Larry Ewing, who was an ardent supporter of SSR’s commitment to trainees. The Fund provides travel assistance for trainee members of the Society to attend and present their research results at the Society's Annual Meeting. It is managed by the Trainee Affairs Committee and is supported by donations, grant monies from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver NICHD/NIH, and the sale of commemorative t-shirts at each meeting.

Any trainee member of the Society who is presenting an abstract at the Society's Annual Meeting may request travel assistance. Funding is intended for trainees who are active in research but have limited funds. Grants are considered a reimbursement of meeting expenses. Trainees must preregister for the Annual Meeting before submitting an application for a travel grant.

To be a qualified applicant, you must be:

  1. a current trainee member of SSR (dues must be paid and mentor's signature on file in the SSR Office by 22 February 2013, the deadline for submission of abstracts), and
  2. the presenter of an accepted abstract at the Annual Meeting.

Applicants are encouraged to complete the application and submit the the completed application packet (including signatures) via email to the LEMTTF Coordinator. Alternatively, completed applications may be sent by fax or regular mail. Emailed or faxed applications must be submitted by midnight 6 June 2013. Packets sent by regular mail must be postmarked by midnight 6 June 2013. See the application form for specific instructions:

Burroughs Wellcome Travel Fellowships for Underrepresented Minority Trainees and Junior Faculty from the U.S.A. or Canada

(Supported by a grant from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund.)

Underrepresented minority trainees and junior faculty are invited to apply for travel fellowships to attend SSR's Annual Meeting. The fellowship includes reimbursement of meeting registration and up to an additional USD $1,200 for housing, food, and travel expenses. Recipients will receive a 2014 SSR membership, a meeting T-shirt, and a ticket to the barbecue dinner & dance.

It is anticipated that six trainees and three junior (non-tenured) faculty who have a background in reproductive biology will be awarded fellowships. A trainee is defined as a student (undergraduate or graduate) or a postdoctoral associate.

To be a qualified applicant, you must be:

  1. a member of an underrepresented minority,
  2. a resident of the United States or Canada, and
  3. enrolled as a student in or teaching at an accredited degree-granting institution in the United States or Canada.

Membership in the Society is not a requirement, nor is submission of an abstract for presentation. As this award provides full support to attend the meeting, recipients of this fellowship may not accept additional travel awards (e.g., LEMTTF, USDA or Lalor Fellowships, FASEB MARC Travel Awards).

Please download the 2013 Burroughs Wellcome Fellowship Application for additional eligibility details. The deadline for applications is 10 May 2013.

FASEB MARC Travel Awards

The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB), through its Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC) program, provides funding for travel awards to encourage and support the participation of underrepresented students and postdoctoral fellows at scientific meetings. Because SSR is a member of FASEB, interested and eligible individuals may apply to FASEB MARC for funding to support travel to SSR's Annual Meeting.

Two types of travel awards are currently available: the Poster/Platform (Oral) Presenter Travel Award and the Faculty/Mentors and Students Travel Award. Application is restricted to underrepresented trainees who are U.S. citizens or are permanent residents of the U.S.A. and who reside within the U.S.A. or its territories.

Please see the FASEB MARC Travel Awards for Scientific Meetings page for eligibility details and to download an application (use the non-meeting-specific forms marked "July-December 2013"). The deadline for applications is 31 May 2013.
