Travel Awards for Underrepresented Minority Trainees and Junior Faculty

(made possible by a grant from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund)

SSR requested and encouraged applications from underrepresented minority trainees and junior faculty to attend SSR’s 2008 annual meeting in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. Each award covered registration and reimbursee up to $610 for housing and $500 in airfare. Each awardee also received a one-year membership to SSR, a t-shirt for the meeting and a ticket for the Barbecue Dinner and Dance. Four minority trainees and one minority junior faculty were selected to receive these awards.

FASEB MARC Travel Awards to SSR 2008

The FASEB MARC program ( offers opportunities for underrepresented trainees for travel awards to the SSR annual meeting. Trainees must be presenting a poster or an oral presentation as the first author. Because SSR is a member of FASEB, interested and eligible individuals may apply for funding to support travel to this year’s SSR meeting. Note that the application is restricted to only underrepresented trainees who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the U.S.A. More information is available at:

Placement Service

The SSR Placement Service provides a vehicle for introducing potential candidates to potential employers seeking to fill predoctoral, postdoctoral, industrial, technical, and faculty positions. We do not attempt to match candidates with positions, nor do we arrange interviews. We do not maintain a file of CVs or formal job announcements. However, we are able to transfer position announcements posted at the Annual Meeting to the FASEB Career Resources online listing if requested. This service is free of charge. In addition, a message board is available at the SSR Annual Meeting for the exchange of information among users of the Placement Service.

To take advantage of the current Placement Service, please go here.

Roommate Referral Service

The SSR’s Roommate Referral service is being coordinated by Rita Vassena. This service connects trainees (and others) with persons seeking roommates for the meeting. It is now closed; the deadline for submitting a Referral request was 9 May.

The 2008 meeting will rely heavily on support from trainees who are serving on the newly established Trainee Volunteer Subcommittee or TVS. The TVS is a new committee formed by the Society to provide structured opportunities for trainees to participate in the annual meeting. If you have any questions or would like to participate as a volunteer, please contact Kathrin Dunlap.
