Climate

Pittsburgh’s average high temperature in July is 83°F (28°C), with an overnight average low temperature of 62°F (17°C). Due to higher humidity levels in July, temperatures may feel warmer. Conference Attire

Casual dress is appropriate for all meetings and social events.

Copies and Faxing

Photocopying and faxing services are available at two Kinko’slocations in downtown Pittsburgh. Each Kinko’s prints posters up to sixty inches (152.4 centimeters) wide, provided a pdf file format is supplied, and preferably on a disc. Other services include copying and duplicating; printing; packaging and shipping; signs and graphics.

Internet Use

WiFi Downtown Pittsburgh - Free Wireless Internet Access

Downtown Pittsburgh offers two free hours of wireless internet access to anyone who visits, works, or lives in the downtown area. Free service is provided in the downtown “Golden Triangle,” including from Point State Park, to the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, and along the Monongahela River to Liberty Bridge.

WiFi Downtown Pittsburgh is powered by US Wireless, and can be accessed any time outdoors in the downtown Pittsburgh area. The WiFi 802.11b/g access may work in some downtown Pittsburgh restaurants and other buildings, but is not guaranteed to work indoors. Valid for any WiFi-enabled computer, portable, or hand-held.

Connecting Step-by-Step

  1. Locate the wireless icon on your desktop toolbar and right click.
  2. Click on “Viewable Wireless Networks.”
  3. Select “WiFi Pittsburgh” and click “Connect.”
  4. Once connected, click on your internet browser (you will receive the WiFi Downtown Pittsburgh page). If not already registered, click on the “Register Now” box and follow the instructions.
  5. Once registered, you can surf the internet anywhere outdoors Downtown for two hours free. The two free hours of Wi-Fi is good for a single 24-hour period.
  6. Next time you use the network, just type in the same password.

If you need more than two free hours during a 24-hour period, US Wireless Online offers various service tiers with their US Wireless Online DayConnect service. DayConnect users will receive 1 Mbps of bandwidth, and will also benefit from VPN and other security encryption protocol support.

Omni William Penn

Free wireless at the Omni William Penn is available to SSR attendees by signing up as a “select guest” when first logging on. There is no cost, and users may select not to be included on any mailing list at that time.

There are more than 85 restaurants within a 15-minute walk of the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, ranging from casual to five-star dining.

Liability insurance is the responsibility of each individual delegate. All delegates should have their own medical coverage.

Medical Services

Two hospitals are located just outside the downtown triangle, and within a 5-minute drive from the David L. Lawrence Convention Center: University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) - Mercy, and Allegheny General Hospital.

Messages for attendees may be posted on a board near the SSR Registration Desk.

Sales Taxes

When making purchases in Pittsburgh, visitors will be assessed a 6% state sales tax plus a 1% county sales tax, excluding clothing, groceries, medical supplies, and prescriptions. Additionally, hotel guests are assessed a 7% occupancy tax in Allegheny County.

Smoking Regulations

Smoking is prohibited in each of the three hotels booked by SSR. Smoking is also prohibited at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.
